Se cuenta la leyenda recogida por los hermanos Grimm y narra la tragedia del 26 de junio del 1284 en la localidad de Hamelín. Apareció una plaga de ratas y, con el fin de ponerle remedio, un flautista desconocido de la zona juró acabar con todas las ratas a cambio de una paga. Los vecinos aceptaron la propuesta y el flautista se llevó a las ratas del pueblo de Hamelín al son de su flauta. Después de acabar con las ratas y salir del pueblo, los vecinos no cumplieron su palabra y no dieron la paga prometida al flautista. Entonces, el flautista, viendo que los vecinos no cumplían su palabra, como venganza, atrajo a los niños del pueblo con el sonido de su flauta y se los llevó del pueblo. Finalmente, el flautista, consternado y consciente del dolor causado en la población, decide devolver a los niños.
