La vida de Carmen Díez de Rivera fue tan excepcional que tiene paralelismos con las tragedias griegas como Antígona o Ariadna. Nacida en unas circunstancias familiares rocambolescas, dentro de lo más granado de la aristocracia española, renunció a los privilegios de clase y llegó a alcanzar un puesto que ninguna mujer ha desempeñado en este país: jefa del Gabinete de la Presidencia del Gobierno.
Y lo hizo en uno de los períodos más complejos e intensos de la historia de España: la transición. Luchó, a menudo sola, contra todo y contra todos. Poseedora de una voluntad firme, una mirada inteligente, tuvo siempre el propósito de guiar a su país hacia la democracia. Su fuerza y arrojo en este cometido público contrastan con su tristeza y su incapacidad para encontrar la paz interior, rota desde su adolescencia por un secreto familiar que le atormentaba.
