El alcalde de Zalamea es mucho más que un drama de honor. Posee la capacidad de involucrar al público en las escabrosas andanzas de sus personajes en clave de comedia para llevarle después a las puertas del horror.
Aquí se cuenta la historia de una violación y su difícil castigo. Desde la perspectiva del público, en la que solo cabe la condena de los hechos y el escándalo por la conducta de los autores, hay que prestar atención a la manera de comportarse del alcalde, que no duda en negociar con el violador de su hija e invitarle a ser su yerno; o de Isabel, la víctima, que entiende que es ella misma quien debe ser castigada.
En fin, circunstancias, creencias y despropósitos de un tiempo pasado que, representadas en un escenario y sin alejarse de la certera mirada de Calderón, ayuda a entender el presente; un presente en el que necesariamente se tiene que cuestionar aquello que fue y descubrir que quizás las cosas han cambiado mucho. O quizás no.
