This band from Tucson, Arizona, takes music from the United States and Mexico, southern rock, Tex-Mex and mariachi, and turns it into a thriving indie rock that brings the two sides of the Rio Grande together.

Calexico's origins date back to 1990, when two Tucson natives, Joey Burns and John Convertino, joined the band Giant Sand, led by Howe Gelb. In 1994, Burns and Convertino started a parallel project, Friends of Dean Martinez, and two years later they founded Spoke, a band they renamed Calexico a short time later.  (More information)

Gregory Porter is a singer with a unique and powerful yet sensual and seductive voice. His vocal prowess, his emotional intensity, his ability to cross-pollinate genres and connect with the audience, his elegance, his imposing appearance, his timeless style... are just some of the reasons why Gregory Porter is considered to be one of today’s greatest male jazz vocalists. 

This baritone, originally hailing from Sacramento, landed a scholarship to play American football at San Diego State University. However, an injury to his shoulder in the first year derailed his sports career and he turned to singing. With influences drawing on blues, gospel and soul, Porter admires singers like Nat King Cole, Joe Williams and Donny Hathaway. In 2010, aged 38, he released his debut album, Water, having since gone on to publish four more solo albums, to excellent public and critical acclaim. He picked up Grammy nods in 2013 and 2016 for Best Jazz Vocal Album.   

Gregory Porter, who has made four appearances at the Jazzaldia, is not only a tour de force and one of the finest voices of 21st century jazz, but, as showcased by his recent live performances, is also on top form.

Iggy Pop is a unique musician, with a larger-than-life personality and a career as long as it is packed with unforgettable anthems and moments. A forerunner of punk, with one of the most outrageous stage antics and setups of all time, provocative, innovative and a creator of genres, Iggy is one of the most influential music artists to come out of the last 5 decades, an icon, a legend. 

Iggy Pop started playing drums with different high school bands in his native Muskegon (Michigan, USA) and took his artistic name, Iggy, the Iguana, from one of those groups, going by the name of the Iguanas. With an interest in blues and a follower of groups like the Sonics, MC5 and the Doors, Iggy Pop, by now as a singer and frontman, released three albums with the Stooges between 1969 and 1973. The three LPs include songs such as “I Wanna Be Your Dog”, “1969”, “No Fun”, ”Down on the Street” and “Gimme Danger”.... The Stooges returned to the stage almost 30 years later, recorded another two albums, by then in the 21st century, and were inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. (More information)

Yann Tiersen (piano, keyboards, electronics)

Popular Breton-born musician Yann Tiersen, composer of memorable songs, is also one of Europe’s most exquisite multi-instrumentalists. His music recreates a personal artistic universe proffered for our enjoyment in recordings of excellent quality and, needless to say, at his always magnificent concerts.

Yann Tiersen shot to international fame in 2001 on composing the soundtrack of Amélie. However, his is a career of countless other aspects and he prefers to distance himself from the classification of film score composer.

Herbie Hancock is one of the greatest pianists in Jazz history. A performer of prodigious musical intelligence on both the electric keyboards and the acoustic piano, he has contributed to all of the major contemporary Jazz trends and has played a leading role in numerous decisive moments: he

accompanied the immortal Miles Davis in his most creative period; he broke the moulds with his own albums; he was a pioneer of Jazz, funk and rock fusion and was a member of the legendary V.S.O.P. quintet. Today the Chicago-born musician continues to develop always innovative and interesting projects.

The musical career of pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, spanning six decades, is strewn with success: 17 Grammys, one in recognition of his life achievement received in 2016, one Oscar, millions of albums sold and widespread public and critical acclaim.

Hancock, honoured with the Donostiako Jazzaldia Award in 2006, has performed on 6 occasions at the Festival, the first time in 1976 and the last in 2017.  (More information)
