Tony Levin y Pat Mastelotto, los poderosos bajo y batería del grupo King Crimson durante varias décadas, llevan esa tradición a todo su hacer. Levin toca el chapman stick, instrumento con cuerdas de bajo y guitarra, y del que la banda ha tomado su nombre. Markus Reuter toca una especie de touch guitar diseñada por él mismo, que cubre uncampo más amplio que una guitarra o un bajo. Y, finalmente, la batería de Mastelotto consta de un dispositivo electrónico que le permite añadir loops, samples y percusión.
