Una mañana dos funcionarios se presentan en la pensión donde vive el gerente bancario Josef K. para informarle que se le acaba de abrir un procedimiento judicial cuya causa desconocen. Le comunican que debe presentarse de inmediato en los juzgados para aclarar su situación. A partir de ese momento, la vida de K. se va a ver atrapada en un absurdo e interminable proceso que, como indica uno de los miembros del tribunal, incluye en sí la propia condena del acusado.
Un tío de K. decide, entonces, ayudar a su sobrino y lo pone en contacto con un abogado amigo suyo, para que, aún a pesar de la enfermedad que lo mantiene en cama, se haga cargo de su defensa. Sin embargo, las gestiones del letrado Huld no terminan de dar fruto, por lo que K. decide finalmente hacerse el mismo responsable de su propio caso.
El sinsentido y la frustración van en aumento hasta que, finalmente, dos guardias vienen a buscar al inculpado, lo conducen a una cantera a las afueras de la ciudad, y allí, sumaria y burocráticamente, ejecutan la sentencia de muerte.
